Frequently asked questions

No visa is required for Australians visiting South Korea for up to 90 days. However, a K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation) is required — apply online before departure for approximately A$8. It’s usually approved within minutes and valid for two years.
As soon as possible. WYD 2027 will bring over a million pilgrims to Seoul, creating massive demand on Sydney–Seoul routes. Current mid-range return fares run A$1,200–1,800; these will rise significantly as the event date approaches. Group bookings may be able to negotiate better rates with airlines.
Hot and very humid — average 28°C with peaks above 35°C. August is monsoon/typhoon season, so expect periods of heavy rain. Outdoor WYD events including the Closing Mass go ahead regardless of weather. Pack light breathable clothing, a compact rain jacket or poncho, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes.
Seoul has one of the world’s best subway systems — clean, fast, air-conditioned, and very cheap (about A$1.50 per ride). A 7-day Climate Card (~A$20) gives unlimited subway and bus travel. The AREX train connects Incheon Airport to central Seoul in 40 minutes. Download Kakao T for taxis and Naver Maps for navigation (Google Maps has limited data in South Korea).
South Korea is rated by the Australian DFAT as “Exercise Normal Safety Precautions” — one of the best possible ratings and one of the safest countries in Asia. Seoul is very tourist-friendly with extremely low crime. Register your trip at smartraveller.gov.au and keep copies of your passport and insurance details.
Absolutely — it is non-negotiable for an event of this scale. Your policy must cover medical expenses and evacuation, trip cancellation, event-specific cancellation, and flight disruption. South Korea has excellent hospitals, but medical evacuation to Australia without cover is extremely costly. Purchase insurance the moment you book your flights.
